Education and enjoyment through our award-winning programmes

At Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House Arts & Visitor Centre, we are aware that we are the current custodians of the unique heritage of this site.  The aims of our Schools’ Heritage Education Programme reflect this approach as we endeavour:

  • To inform and to encourage learning about the historical significance of the Hill of The O’Neill and its inhabitants by offering a wide-ranging and appropriate programme of heritage education activities to schools and colleges
  • To support schools and colleges in their study of local history
  • To offer heritage outreach programmes and activities to schools and colleges

Highlights of our annual programme include:

  • Words on the Hill (KS2/3)
  • History on the Hill (KS1/2)
  • Dungannon: Where I Live (KS2)
  • A Victorian Christmas in Ranfurly House (KS2/3)
  • The Workhouse (P5-7)
  • An Introduction to Archaeology (KS2/3)

Details of the entire programme can be found in our Heritage Education for Schools and Colleges Guide

Multi award-winning Heritage Education Programme

The quality of our Heritage Education Programme has been widely recognised and has received a number of awards in recent years:

  • Sandford Awards in 2014 and 2019
  • Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badges in 2017 and 2019
  • A Heritage Angel Award (with Seamus Heaney HomePlace) in 2019 for the Heartland project

The Sandford Awards recognise this centre’s outstanding contribution to heritage education and learning within the historic environment:

“The good experience that schools have in attending Hill of The O’Neill & Ranfurly House Arts & Visitor Centre is a triumph of organisation and a testament to the Education Officer and managers.”
Sandford Award Winner, Judge’s Report.

The awarding of the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badges demonstrate that our Heritage Education Programme has passed robust assessments designed to ensure that it is meeting schools' learning and risk management needs.

And the presentation of a prestigious Heritage Angel Award demonstrates the commitment of the Education Officers in this centre, and in Seamus Heaney HomePlace, to working on quality outreach projects with Mid Ulster schools.
